Qualifications:

  • Current Administrator Certification from Oklahoma State Department of Education.
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited University required.
  • At least ten (10) years’ experience as a teacher or administrator in Public Education.
  • Experience with government relations and external relations.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in Oklahoma. 

Job Summary:

The General Counsel is responsible for providing legal opinions to the Board of Education and for providing legal counsel to the Superintendent and staff.  The General Counsel must possess special knowledge of Constitutional law and Oklahoma school law, knowledge of Oklahoma’s statutes pertaining to schools, and knowledge of the regulatory powers, limitations, authorities, and responsibilities of the Superintendent.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal opinions, legal interpretations, and recommendations to the Superintendent and district administration for the purpose of ensuring the district maintains compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Reviews, edits, and creates district documents for the purpose of conveying information to both internal and external entities in a legally compliant manner.
  • Exercise considerable judgment in his/her capacity with the responsibility for analyzing policy issues, identifying District-wide impacts and coordinating responses to the Superintendent on strategies and alternatives for dealing with the issues.
  • Coordinate and play a lead role in government relations with the Superintendent’s office and the District.
  • Advises district staff concerning legal matters for the purpose of maintaining the district in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Participates in key meetings with faculty, administrators and others as needed and delegated by the Superintendent.
  • Accurately represent the Superintendent‘s position in internal meetings and discussions to help drive understanding and move decision-making forward.
  • Provides staff development for the purpose of educating others on their legal responsibilities.
  • Maintains and catalogues legal documents and contracts for the purpose of ensuring accurate reference materials.
  • And all Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Primary Location:

Western Heights Administration Building

Salary Range:  Dependent upon qualifications

Full-Time with Benefits (as provided to all other Administrators)
