Job Title:                    Health Aid - CNA
Reports To:                Nurse Coordinator and/or Principal
                               
            
Credentials:               CNA certification and CPR certification preferred.
Education:                 Associate Degree or 48 hours college credit or have passed the Para Pro or Work Keys Test                              
 
Training or Experience Required:  Previous work or volunteer experience with children, teenagers, or clerical experience preferred.
 
Job Summary:  The Health Aide performs entry level to semi-skilled level duties under general supervision to assist with medical issues.  He/she is responsible for promoting, improving, and maintaining the health of students.  The Health Aide Teacher Assistant serves as a resource person in matters of health and functions as an integral part of the school staff.
 
Knowledge, Skills, Competencies and Abilities:

  1. Effective interpersonal skills in managing and interacting with diverse stakeholders.
  2. Effective communication skills (oral, written, and/or business) to exchange information, give/receive simple instructions and to respond to inquiries.  This includes filling out forms properly.
  3. Effective and accurate data recording/record keeping. This includes the ability to perform non-complex recording/record keeping operations requiring logging, filing or posting single entry items either manually or by computer.
  4. Knowledge of basic mathematical skills to perform routine computations requiring knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using whole numbers, fractions, decimals and/or percentages.
  5. Ability to read and interpret routine written or printed materials such as charts, diagrams, maps or instruction material.
  6. Ability to use and have knowledge of technology devices including but not limited to computers, copiers, and medical equipment.
  7. Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  8. Knowledge of grammatical structure and vocabulary for preparing correspondence from rough draft to proofing of completed material.
  9. Knowledge and experience with federal, state, and district health guidelines.
  10. Ability to interpret and translate facts and information to explain situations and issues to others.
  11. Demonstrated customer service/people skills to resolve problems and provide information as requested. 
  12. Knowledge of and ability to follow safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to self or to students, inclusive of the District Exposure Control Plan for Bloodborne Pathogens. 

 
Essential Job Functions (PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES):

  1. Alerts teacher to health needs of students.
  2. Assists students with personal care needs.
  3. Assists with minor first aid.
  4. Communicates\health issues sensitively and accurately with students and parents. This may include letters home.
  5. Facilitates appointments with health care providers and/or clinic appointments.
  6. Supervises students inside and outside the classroom.
  7. Administers medications according to doctor’s orders or student health plans.  This includes the 5 “rights”:  right patient, right route, right medication, right time, and right documentation.
  8. Assists students with normal activities.
  9. Follows all HIPPA, and FERPA guidelines.
  10. Meets district standards of performance and follows all board policies.
  11. Performs other health related duties, or tasks as assigned.

 
Supervision exercised:  Employee does not supervise other employees.

 

Data Recording/Record Keeping:  Maintain student health records on the computer, and in student files.

 

Sites:  High School, Middle School or Elementary School; may travel throughout district.

Reports to:  District School Nurse, Director of Special Services.

 

Job Goal (purpose of position):  Under the supervision of the District School Nurse, the employee will implement, manage and deliver school health service to maximize health and wellness in the school community.  These Services will be provided in compliance with State Laws and District Policy.

 

An incumbent in this position will follow generally standardized operating policies and procedures.  On occasion will have to interpret policies and procedures and follow predetermined solutions established by higher level supervision or operating procedures.

 

Contact with Others:  The Health Assistant comes in contact with parents, students, and school personnel on a daily basis.  Maintenance of a professional attitude and ability to communicate well are a must.  All nursing care and classroom activities should be conducted with quality, accuracy and awareness of the personal dignity of others.

 

Other Performance Measures:  Successful performance of the job requires customer service/people skills to resolve problems and provide information as requested.  It requires the following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to self or to students.  It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habit concerns.  Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving is important to success of the position.

Physical Demands:  The LPN/Assistant must be in good health.  Regular attendance is required for continuity of care.  Lifting and assisting students with limited self-help skills will be necessary.  Work is performed with patience, consistency, and endurance.

 

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions:

 

In a typical work day, employee must be able to sit, stand and walk for eight hours.  Job requires occasional bending/stooping, squatting/crouching, crawling/kneeling, reaching above the shoulder and pushing/pulling.  Job requires carrying/lifting up to 15 pounds and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds (boxes of materials, screening equipment, CPR training equipment, etc.).  Job requires employee to use both hands for repetitive actions involving simple/firm grasping and fine manipulation.  Employee must possess manual dexterity sufficient to operate computers and other office equipment.  Employee must possess good visual and hearing abilities sufficient to observe students and staff and communicate with students, staff and parents in large and/or small groups.  Employee must have mobility enough to move from site to site.  Employee is required to have a reliable vehicle for traveling throughout the district.

 

Terms of employment:  7.5 hours 5 days a week
