Qualifications:

Credentials:  

  • Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
  • Journey level construction/maintenance experience in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and some welding.
  • Some experience in carpentry.

Education:    

  • High school/GED
  • Specialized vocational training in construction trades and heating, ventilating and air conditioning

Training or Experience Required:

  • Four to Five years in the construction trades/heating and air conditioning field
  • Some training may substitute for some on the job experience

 

Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

Communication Skill: Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive simple instructions, and respond to inquiries.  Includes filling out forms.

 

Data Recording/Record Keeping: Performs data recording/record keeping operations determining what changes need to be made to existing records, including computerized records.

 

Mathematical Skills: Performs routine computation requiring a knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using whole numbers, fractions, decimals or percentages.

 

Reading and Interpreting: Reads and interprets complex written or printed materials such as schematics, blueprints, building plans, charts, diagrams, maps, or instruction materials.

 

Tools and Equipment Usage: Uses tools or equipment with expertise acquired through extensive experience and/or specialized training.  The most complicated equipment includes volt amp ohm meters, freon gauges, refrigerant reclaimer machine, recovery/recycle equipment, vacuum pumps, and welding (oxygen acetylene) torches.

 

Reports to: Director of Operations

 

Purpose of Position: Performs skilled/full journey level duties under limited supervision to repair or maintain heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system and equipment within the district; to repair electrical switches, panels, etc; install or repair plumbing fixtures; and perform carpentry/welding duties as assigned.

 

Contact with Others: An incumbent in this position has some regular public contact with the public and with members of own staff or district.

 

Other Performance Measures: Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills to resolve problems.  It requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury.  It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns.  Some initiative, self discipline and effective problem solving are necessary for the success of the position.  Must be able to cooperate with other staff members and have a positive attitude towards staff, students, and the public to enhance educational goals.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs mechanical, heating and refrigeration equipment in the district. Contacts outside technicians when repairs exceeds expertise or requires special licensing.
  • Performs preventive maintenance to plumbing fixtures and lines, electrical, and mechanical equipment. Cleans coils, keeps units cleaned and oiled, changes filters.
  • Installs and/or repairs gas and water lines and drains and sewer lines. Checks and repairs gas leaks.  Repairs breaks in underground water and drain lines.  May install and repair sprinkler systems.  Unstops drain lines.
  • Installs, repairs, replaces faucets, sinks, toilets, showers, and other plumbing fixtures.
  • Installs, repairs, and/or remodels building fixtures, doors, walls, windows, roofs, etc. Performs rough carpentry/framing, ceiling tiles, hangs items for teachers, textures walls in preparation for painting; paints walls, ceilings, and other structures.  May build shelves, cabinets, countertops, etc.  Seals, stains, and varnishes woodwork.
  • May lay sub flooring, tile, etc. May assist with installation of glass and mirrors, etc.
  • Installs, repairs, and builds playground equipment. Performs minor welding repairs on equipment and handrails, etc.
  • Performs electrical repairs to wall outlets, circuit breakers, lights and switches.
  • Must be able to plan and organize work. Must be able to measure a job and assist supervisor in purchasing necessary materials at the most economical price.
  • Informs supervisor of parts, equipment, and other supplies that are necessary to do job. Keeps necessary parts and supplies on hand for common projects.
  • Provides suggestions that would prolong the life of the equipment.
  • Oversees housekeeping duties and ensures that work area, shop, and tools, including assigned vehicle, are properly maintained.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Supervision exercised:  Employee does not provide direct supervision over staff.  May provide indirect supervision over other employees on a particular project.

 

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • In a work day, the employee must stand/walk 6-8 hours per day. Employee’s job requires occasional to frequent to continuous bending/stooping, squatting/crouching, pushing/pulling, climbing (up to 40 feet on occasion on automatic air life to change lights/repair scoreboard in gym), and reaching above the shoulders.  Occasional crawling/kneeling is required.
  • Employee’s job requires frequent carrying/lifting of up to 35 pounds and occasional lifting from 35-90 pounds carrying tool boxes, welding equipment, motors and equipment.
  • Employee must possess manual dexterity/visual ability to operate hand and power tools, and ladders safely. Must be able to read labels, blueprints, and schematics.  Employee must possess hearing to distinguish normal/abnormal sounds.  Must be able to communicate with following works and the public.  Must be able to climb ladders and work within confined spaces.  Must be able to see problems and dangers in low visibility situations.
  • Employee’s job requires working on unprotected heights to change out parking lot lights and on roof; Use of/close to machinery (boilers/air handlers); working in the outdoors with temperature changes; driving motorized equipment (tractors, trucks, buses and lifts); exposure to toxic and pressurized gas (freon), liquids, high voltages and working on live circuits.
